We are very aware nowadays of the term Carbon Footprint, of organisations as well as individuals. It is important to be aware of this for sustaining a healthy ecology.
But do we think of the Cost Footprint of an individual? Do we think - How much do I consume? How much does it cost the earth to keep me alive the way I live? And, most importantly, whether my contribution is covering the cost?
We have come far from our hunter-gatherer days, when we had a Cost Footprint similar to other animals, and although we did not contribute anything significant to earth or other creatures on the planet, it was within the 'budgeted cost', so to speak. We have come a long way since then and the disparity in cost-footprint of individuals is staggering.
Keynes said, consume more. You may become poorer, but somehow the nation becomes richer. I don't buy this line of economic theory. Living consumes resource. It is important that we live while consuming optimally, if not minimally. Then only the single source of resource, the earth, can last longer.
Simple living high thinking is not just for nerds. Those at the heel of the Cost Footprint may not have a choice, but for others, watching our Step can constitiute concious living.
Let's tread lightly.
